The purpose of the competition is to select a design for the Thematic Pavilion, one of the major facilities of the Expo 2012 Yeosu, Korea. The Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea will be held from 12 May 2012 to 12 August 2012, under the theme of "The Living Ocean and Coast: Diversity of Resources and Sustainable Activities"
The theme of the Expo 2012 Yeosu was selected: to raise people's awareness about the values and the critical environmental problems of oceans; and to suggest a new ocean vision for future generation.
The Thematic Pavilion, in which places, architecture and the exhibition will be integrated as one for the strategic proposal by the Organizing Committee, conveys the image of the Expo's theme, "The Living Ocean and Coast: Diversity of Resources and Sustainable Activities." For the Thematic Pavilion, an oceanic architecture is recommended to accommodate the most iconic building that will reflect the theme of the Expo, the 'Oceans' and 'Coasts'. It should consider to maximize and differentiate the visitor's experience of the ocean and living from that of other buildings around the world, whilst in harmony with the ocean space.
The competition is open to an architect, or who is registered and/or licensed in the appropriate professional registry, or a multi-disciplinary team led by an architect from around the world.
